Who else has a child with special needs?
I know there are lots of us about!
Hopefully we can share support, info and advice here.
I have an eight year old son who is autistic. At the moment he's in mainstream school with 1:1 support. He's a dear little chap at heart but he can certainly be a handful too!

Nathan is 7 and has Aspergers, adhd and dyspraxia, he is also in mainstream school but not 1:1 yet but if he struggles in year 3 they might change there minds, I know what you mean about being a handful, we found that If Nathan eats or drinks anything with Aspartame (E951) it sends him extremely hyper and really nasty.

As you all may know i have Laura who is 19 years old, she is downs syndrome and also has servere autisum, she is doubly incontinent which means she is still in nappys
Laura has now left school and attends kirk house 5 days aweek as of next monday, she also goes to swallow house one night a week for respite care, which is a great help to me as laura can be a real handful at times

Re: Who else has a child with special needs?
the education people and goverment are trying to get more students pupils to go to main stream schools thrus ending and restricting the special needs statement but for the pupils that actually require the statement and specialschool that should stand although be a lot harder. all kids should have a statement of specialeducation although some can be high functional, but they can have of days and children and adults can be cruelflowerpopgirl wrote:[code]hi I am mum to richard, he is 22 and is austic has fits, can be very aggressive, attended toyton college for 3 years, 2 weeks before he was due to move on to their resdential services funding was withdrawn and also found he had been neglected while in supported living within the college. richard is a handfull and life is hard due to myself being disabled

Re: Who else has a child with special needs?
the thing is we learn through love to meet their needs. we have no problems with them it's other peoples ignorance. aiden makes plans for his future so does nathan i have got nathan learning to drive. i know aiden will need me for many years to come and nathan is in no big hurry to leave home, kirsty my daughter came back with 2 kiddies but i love them no matter what and will help them as much as i can. that's what mums are for.

Re: Who else has a child with special needs?
it can be very hard with a special needs child (well adult in my case), laura can become quite aggresive, but she is now on some medicine and she is a lot calmer now, but we do put up with a lot, but them again thats what mums do

Re: Who else has a child with special needs?
I love richard to bits and hopefully if we had been given the choice of market rasen college we would have taken that, I regret letting richard go as it has made him worse in so many ways and now with my health not good, I am meeting share the care on recomdation of gp and they are going to see if we need anything, all parents need a pat on the back for being there as having children/adults with disablites is a million to one job and we all deserve a big hug, xxxx
