i "harvested" my tomatoes today
i got 8 "moneymaker" tomato plants from dragonlight, i kept them indoors until the beginning of june to avoid frosts, then planted them in 3 gro bags outside, they blossomed in september, today there where defiantly dead, i got 1 small tomato off them in total, the gro bags where £3 from asda, so its an expensive tomato! ill stick to buying them in future i think!

Growing tomatoes is a 'hit and miss' affair for me to.Many years have seen just the one tomatoe but this year I've had, and eaten, so many I'm beginning to look like one.I've also had to make and bottle 3kgs of green tomatoe chutney.(Now I'm showing off!).Its probably not applicable, and maybe rubbing salt into the wound, but if you want the recipe........

Re: i "harvested" my tomatoes today
No problem sharing the recipe for green tomato chutney.Far more concerned about the way I blindly went on spelling tomato, tomatoe.Sounds like that could be a good line in a song!!!!
Anyway,I simply 'Googled' the subject and was directed to www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/greentomatochutney_8201.shtml
However, this is a Keith Floyd recipe and requires bruising root ginger and chillies in a muslin bag etc so gave it a miss.Further searching led me to http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/2865/green-tomato-chutney which is almost identical to Floyd's without the chef bits. Its turned out very well but the advice is to let it 'mature' for 2 to 3 weeks before tasting so it may turn out quite vile!Furthermore at the bottom of this recipe there is sound advice on sterilising jars.I use the same method when making marmalade and it works a treat. If you get it right ,as the contents cool, with the lid on of course,a vacuum is formed and re-makes the dipple in the middle of the lid.A good visual indication that the contents are sterilised and the jar correctly sealed.Hope this helps Combom.

Re: i "harvested" my tomatoes today
A friend enchoraged me to try my first taste of the home made green tomato chutney as described above http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/2865/green-tomato-chutney and its absolutely delicious.I can, therefore, recommend this recipe. It is very similar in colour and taste to 'Branston Pickle' but has a better texture which you can adjust,of course, and has a better depth of spicy flavour.Almost sweet followed by sour.Lovely with a good piece of cheddar.
